American Express wasn’t able to find a hotel in Trelew so we had to take one in Puerto Madryn. This is a town on the Atlantic with a beautiful and very long beach with a whole host of shops and restaurants. Lots of people come here, probably from far away in Patagonia to escape with their families in the summer months. We liked this beach too and wandered about four to five km along it and back. While strolling along, we saw some very elegant houses and a little monument that Kurt added a sixth head to.

Strangely, a black and then a golden-brown dog joined me during my beach walk. Both dogs clearly wanted something from my backpack. It took a half to one kilometre to shake these dogs off, but they didn’t bite me at all.

The exertions of the past few days meant that Kurt suddenly had a seemingly unquenchable thirst and started to order litre bottles of beer. Hopefully, that won’t be the case for the whole trip!

We downed the litre bottle of beer in the restaurant and had a chat to the waiter who was called Thomas. Thomas came from Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego and had great-grandparents who hailed from Germany and have German roots. Which is why he was particularly interested in talking to us – unfortunately only in English and not in German. He was a really nice young man. And another young woman had a photo taken of herself and Kurt for whatever reason.

After our beach day we’d definitely recharged our batteries, were full of beans and ready to carry out the next leg to Punta Arenas.
