“I was totally lost for words”
“Uwe Thomas and I have been friends since the third grade. As young lads we tripped the light fantastic on many a dance floor in the villages around Husum. To get about, at the time we used Uwe's mother’s VW beetle, which usually ran on its last drop of petrol. The first time we flew together was the flight rally in Lower Saxony in 1995. Later on Uwe Thomas helped me bring a plane from Czechoslovakia. It was very useful that he had the English aircraft radio certificate.

When Uwe Thomas started off in mid March from Husum on the first leg of his round the world flight, I tipped my old friend the wink to let him know how much I’d like to come too. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would actually be taking my seat as the co-pilot on the second leg from Sydney – but sometimes dreams actually do come true.”
